Mr. Fletcher O. Bagley, age 81 of Auburndale, FL went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 due to respiratory failure. Mr. Bagley was born in Thomasville, AL and had lived in the Auburndale area since 1969 after retiring from the military. Mr. Bagley spent 20 years in the Army seeing military action in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He also retired after working 20 years with GTE, he worked 6 years as a crossing guard with the Polk County Sheriff’s Department and was a rancher. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening. He is survived by his wife, Loretta Bagley of Auburndale, FL; daughter, Rebecca Bagley of Winter Park, FL; three sons, Glenn Hobgood of Hattiesburg, MS; Michael A. Bagley of Tampa, FL; Matthew Bagley of A’dale, FL; sister, Agnes Jackson of Mobile, AL; four grandchildren, Gerald Morrison, Nathaniel Jester, Rice Hobgtood, and Grant Hobgood, great granddaughter, Brooklyn Leanne Hobgood. Hubert Cecil Thornton, a much loved husband, father, grandfather, son and brother passed into eternity peacefully at his home on March 26, 2014 with his family present. He had bravely confronted and battled cancer. Hubert was born in Rockford, Alabama on July 7, 1935. From 1954-1957 he served in the US Army in Japan and Korea as an Army Traffic Analysis. After returning home, he finished high school and attended Jacksonville State. During this time, he married Hilda Ree Hughes and in 1961 they moved to Linden, Alabama where they resided for 53 years. He was employed at Georgia Pacific for 37 years. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Hilda Ree Hughes of Linden, Alabama; daughter, Celia Kyle Adams and husband, Larry of Birmingham, Alabama; daughter, Teresa Ann Vick and husband, Russell (Rusty) of Linden, Alabama; daughter, Amanda Lynn Arledge and husband, Jason of Gallion, Alabama; grandson, Keaton Adams; granddaughters, Renee Whitcomb, Kathryn Gay, Ashley Whitcomb, and Ally Vick; sisters, DuAnne Conner of Cocoa, Florida and Sandra Foster and husband, Doug of Freeport. Florida; brother, Aeril Thornton and wife, Dorothy of Sylacauga, Alabama. He was preceded in death by his father, James Dewey Thornton; mother, Mary Ada Thornton; brothers, Earl Thornton and Elvis Thornton; and sister, Virginia Murray all of Sylacauga; and son-in-law, Coleman Whitcomb. During retirement years Hubert and Hilda traveled the US often with Hilda’s sisters, Priscilla Mitchell and Martine Hughes whom he loved like sisters. Hubert and Hilda enjoyed Hawaii, the Canadian Rockies, Montana, Yellowstone National Park, Idaho, Niagara Falls, Charleston, Savannah, Gatlinburg, and many other places. Hubert gave his life to Christ in 2011 and enjoyed membership and fellowship at the Linden Church of Christ. He loved his family and considered his children and grandchildren the joy of his life. Services will be held at O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home in Linden, Alabama on March 31, 2014. Visitation will begin at 10am and the service begins at 11am. Burial will follow at Linden Memorial Park. Mittie Crum Cook Mason, age 89, died at home, surrounded by her family, on April 5, 2014. A native of Wilcox County, Alabama, Mittie was the youngest child of Abe Crum Cook and Lallie Bragg Cook. She grew up in the Rock West/Possum Bend community outside of Camden. After graduating from Wilcox County High School, she went to Alabama Polytechnic Institute, now Auburn University, where she received a degree in 1947. Her teaching career began when she took a temporary teaching job in Pine Hill, where she met Harry Austin Mason and plans changed. They married in 1949, and she left teaching to raise three children, but returned to the classroom in 1971. For hundreds of students she was known fondly as “Miss Mittie.” She taught first grade, but her interest in her students didn’t stop at simply giving them a good start. She remained a friend and mentor, always encouraging them to set high standards, to continue their education and to join her in her life-long endeavor to make Wilcox County a better place to live. Even in retirement, Mittie continued her practice of helping students excel by connecting them with scholarships and encouraging them to go to college. She was awarded the Simpson Foundation’s Palmer Prize in 1998 for her lifetime commitment to education in the Wilcox County. Students were second only to her love for her grandchildren and great grandchildren and her many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Mittie was a member of the Pine Hill United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for more than 45 years. She was active in many community projects including the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, Wilcox County Historical Society and renovating the old Pine Hill Depot. She is survived by her husband of 64 years and their three children: Harry Edward Mason (Doris) of Livingston, Thomas Cook Mason of Mobile and Mittie Felicia Mason of Birmingham. She is also survived by two grandchildren: Eddie Mason (Stephanie) and Staci Mason Rogers (Aduston), and four great-grandchildren: Jackson Mason, Bryce Mason, Lallie Rogers and McPherson Rogers. She is also survived by her loving caregivers Patricia Klug and Sarah Brackett. Funeral services will be at the Pine Hill United Methodist Church on Monday, April 7 at 3 p.m. The family will receive visitors at the church beginning at 2 p.m. Rev. Dawn Bond will officiate. Her great nephews will serve as pallbearers. Burial will be in the Pine Hill Cemetery immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the United Methodist Children’s Home, 3140 Zelda Court, Montgomery, AL 36106, or to the scholarship program of your choice.
